Why Do Glasses and Goggles Fog?

Why Do Glasses & Goggles Fog?

There are many variables that will cause fogging weather it be goggles, glasses or your car windshield.

There are goggles with dual lenses such as a dual pane windows that the "Snow" crowd uses that helps to eliminate this problem, however when they fog you are pretty much out of luck. There are also various sprays and anti fog wipes as well as a million "home remedies" that may help. Although we have never seen them, there is a pair of goggles that actually has a small fan mounted on the frame that blows air onto the lens and a battery pack on the strap in an effort to avoid this problem.

When warm moist air comes in contact with a cold surface, the water held in the air as vapor condenses into tiny liquid drops as it cools against the surface.

Lens Fogging affects people differently, according to:
  • How much the person tends to perspire and the heat generated in their sporting activity.
  • The shape of the person's face as it affects airflow on the lens.
  • The shape of the glasses as it affects airflow on the lens.
  • The user's environment; air temperature, humidity and wind.
  • Every person is different, and each person's face shape will contribute differently to the lens fogging or not.
  • Your breath or even the heat rising from your motor can also cause fogging if it is contacting the lenses. This would be similar to intentionally breathing on your glasses to "fog" them for cleaning.

Basically fogging is caused by:

An airflow problem when heat contacts the cold lenses, this is why the fog disappears once you start moving again and create an air flow around the lenses. The All Star goggles have double sided anti fog coated lenses as well as top and bottom venting, you really can't get much better than that. You may try loosening the strap so the frame does not fit as tight to your face or even pulling the frame away from your face at the first sign of fogging to allow cool air in. Have you ever noticed that while driving a car in cold or rainy weather if the windshield fogs up and you turn the defroster on, the fog immediately gets worse from the warm air, however if you open the window or use cold air from the vent only setting the fog will immediately disappear. This would have the same effect

Unfortunately there is no "sure fire" cure for this problem.
